XFINITY X1

The Olympic Winter Games 2018 on X1

The 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea ran from February 8 – 25 and once again, Comcast NBCUniversal had the honor of bringing the Games home to America. With the incredible storytelling of NBCUniversal combined with the technology of Xfinity X1, we brought customers the most live, mobile and technologically advanced Olympics experience ever.  And for the first time, we are honored to be an official partner of Team USA.

Simple. Engaging. Dramatic.

These would be the three words that we would use to describe our take on the Olympics design style. We’ve learned from previous promotional events that personality and faces drive engagement. We wanted to make these athletes feel larger than life, bold, and welcoming. We then juxtaposed these images with dramatic action shots. Images captured in the moment to show the intensity and serious moments of competition.

Most importantly, we wanted to capture the story of these athletes. Friendly with great warming personalities, but at the same time the fiercest competitors within their sport.

One Cohesive Unit

We curated the best moments of each day, trending athletes, spills and thrills and more. Daily summaries offering real-time snapshots of the Olympics with up-to-date information on the day’s events, featured athletes and a medal tracker were all easily accessible with the X1 Voice Remote and from the main menu.

Linear Viewing

One of the trickier problems that our team faced for this Olympics was needing to solve linear viewing. We didn’t have a set schedule to begin the games, and there was always the potential for certain events to be moved around. We designed a solution that would automate the process of creating tiles “on the fly”.

The system would request a tile for "Alpine Skiing, Hockey, and Snowboarding.” From here one of the applications would take the images we’ve provided and compose them into a full tile that is sent to the television with a gradient/coloring overlay applied. While this tool was great for the games, we’ve further extended it into various other areas on the platform with great success.
